Resumo

In this research we investigate the relationship between economic growth and inequality in developing countries, with special attention to Latin America and the Caribbean. In opposition to the literature dedicated to this issue, that tries to establish a causal influence from inequality to growth, we focus on the attempt to identify the consequences of different economic growth processes on functional and personal income distributions. In most alternative approaches, factor accumulation and productivity growth lead to increases on production. Although those processes foster economic growth, they have distinct effects on inequality. For example, an increase on the rate of capital accumulation leads to an increase on labor/capital relative price while an increase in technical efficiency leads to a decrease on such price, leading to opposite impacts on functional and personal income distributions. The theoretical analysis also had leaded us to investigate the effects of political and institutional changes of developing countries on both growth and inequality. In this sense, the present research focused on two important questions: (i) the effects of economic reforms on growth and inequality trends in Latin American and the Caribbean; and (ii) the impacts of globalization (i.e. the openness of financial and goods markets for international trade) on growth and inequality in developing countries, including nearest reformed socialist economies.
