O Sertão de Canudos em ebuliçãociência, política e memória na construção do Açude Cocorobó

Resumo

The present dissertation seeks to analyze the construction of the Cocorobó Dam, built between 1951 and 1969 in the backlands of Canudos, responsible for submerging the ruins of the historical city of Belo Monte and the village of Canudos. In order to carry out a long time span analysis, the research focuses on the construction of the concept of sertão throughout the 20th century and how this concept was consolidated in the idea of the semi-arid Northeastern sertão from the contribution of agents and state agencies, forging an image of sertão that is close to the one used in the present time. Seeking to construct an analysis that dialogues with the production on the State and state dynamics, I mobilize the concept of the State debated by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and by the anthropologists Antonio Carlos de Souza Lima and Adriana Facina. One of the main threads of the analysis outlined throughout the dissertation was to understand the apprehension of the poet from Ceará, Patativa do Assaré, of how society and the sertanejo space were in a process of transformation. The mobilization of contexts prior to the 1950s and 1960s aimed at setting up the panorama in which the modifications carried out by DNOCS and state agents in the process of building Cocorobó were structured. This work is understood here within the context of the "hydraulic solution" for the recurring droughts. By confronting the department's documents and the production of state and national periodicals, this research aimed at debating and questioning the most common assumptions up to the present about the construction of the aforementioned dam, putting into critical perspective the impact of this work and the perceptions and oppositions of the local population and external interlocutors.
