Resumo

This dissertation investigates the role of a generation of Brazilian editors with backgrounds in cultural journalism, who rose to prominence in the publishing field between 1985 and 2020, in the aftermath of the military regime. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory and introducing the concept of the editor-interpreter, the study explores how these agents — emerging from newsrooms — occupy strategic positions in mediating between authors, readers, and the market. The editor-interpreter is understood here as a culturally competent figure who translates, curates, and legitimizes texts, operating at the intersection of symbolic authority and commercial demands. Conceiving the publishing field as a site of symbolic struggle among different forms of capital — cultural, economic, and social — this research adopts a qualitative methodology, centered on filmed and recorded interviews conducted according to the principles of Oral History. These narratives support a prosopographical approach, enabling the identification of patterns and singularities in editorial careers, while offering a dynamic reading of their insertion and recognition within the field. The analysis highlights the complex interplay between cultural commitment and market logic that defines the symbolic legitimacy of these editor-interpreters.
