Resumo
This study aims to investigate the relationship between cognitive development and the evolution of the concept of death, and to identify and describe the characteristcs of the concept of death at three different levels of cognitive development. A review was made of the literature covering the theoretical bases and empirical findings relative both to the evolution of the concept of death and to cognitive development. A probing instrument of the concept of death was specially devised to evaluate three dimensions - extension, meaning and duration - of the concept of biological death. For evaluation of cognitive development tasks were propoused according to Piaget's moldes. On the basis of the results obtained, it may be concluded that there is a relationship between cognitive development and the evolution of the concept of death as evaluated by the probing instrument above mentioned. Three levels of the concept of death were identified as being descriptive of the ideas of children at different units – preoperational subperiod, concrete operational subperiod and formal operational period - of cognitive development.
