Resumo

The concept of decentralized finance (DeFi) is recent and still little explored, which has raised doubts about its dimension and understanding. There are emerging studies that seek to situate the environment of decentralized finance, but they present similarities, but they also present differences, which led us to conclude that there is still no established definition and understanding of this environment. Through a literature review and a sample survey of 2,495 decentralized finance protocols, a useful taxonomy for the DeFi environment was proposed, with the aim of generating a greater understanding of this environment. Through 7 iterations and detailed analysis of DeFi protocol categories, this study achieved the proposed objective of building a useful taxonomy of the DeFi environment by evaluating decentralized payment services. When compared to emerging taxonomies, this study brings a different look from existing taxonomies, the analysis of the protocols was carried out from the macro view (categories) to the micro view (method of payment protocols), and when compared with the emerging taxonomies, it enriched the studies existing ones, which promotes the increase of knowledge about this still little explored environment. The micro analysis in means of payments allowed the contribution and generated a new characteristic in the business dimension which is the connection with the centralized environment (CeFi), where it was divided between complementary or concurrent characteristics. As future studies, this work proposed the exploration of other categories of DeFi services in search of new characteristics that can contribute to this study and to the decentralized finance environment.
