Resumo

Climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss pose increasing challenges to public health and public policymaking, making it essential to understand how individuals and communities access, interpret, and use health- and environmentrelated information. In this context, this dissertation investigates different dimensions of environmental health literacy and climate health literacy among Brazilian multiethnic populations. The research adopts a multimethod approach structured around four complementary studies, including a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature, an assessment of health literacy using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), the development and validation of an instrument to measure climate health literacy, and an investigation of the influence of cognitive biases on the perception of climate-related health risks. The findings reveal important gaps in the literature, identify sociodemographic and cognitive factors associated with health literacy, and provide a novel instrument for measuring climate health literacy. The dissertation advances scientific knowledge by integrating perspectives from public health, environmental health, climate health, and behavioral economics, while generating evidence to support public policies, risk communication strategies, and interventions aimed at promoting health, environmental justice, and climate change adaptation.
