Resumo

This study investigates the longevity of substantial family fortunes and the mechanisms that enable their transfer across generations. It first reviews historical legal structures — morgados, fideicomissa and fee tails — to show how families from different eras preserved their assets amid internal disputes and external fiscal, political and economic pressures. The discussion then turns to contemporary strategies for asset organization — holdings, SCPs, offshore entities, trusts and foundations — highlighting the importance of robust succession planning. At the heart of the analysis lies family governance, anchored in family councils, regular meetings, constitutions and family offices; these instruments are indispensable for aligning interests and facilitating a seamless transfer of wealth. Under the lens of agency theory, the text explores ways to mitigate moral hazard and harmonize incentives between family members and professional managers. Finally, it examines the education of younger generations and the role of a strong family culture in sustaining long-term cohesion. The study concludes that the combination of sound legal protection and solid governance forms the cornerstone of intergenerational prosperity and the preservation of the family legacy.
