Resumo

This paper analyzes the internacionalization of industrial production in Brazil during the nineties. Foreign direct investment (FDI) and its impact on economic growth, particularly on productive and technological linkages and on foreign trade are focused. After examining the profile of current FDI in Brazil, the paper concludes that, in spite of a significant increase in value, its long run contribution to economic growth is limited. Current FDI is highly concentrated in the production of durable consumption goods for the domestic market and requires massive importation of machinery, parts and raw materials. Its capacity to expand and upgrade the exportation of manufacturing goods is limited. FDI currently represents a very important source of foreign currency but, in the long run, it seems unlikely to remove one of the main obstacles to growth in Brazil, namely, the trade deficit in manufacturing.
