Resumo

After the middle of the 90’s, the flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) increased a lot. Nevertheless, this flow was mainly directed to the service sector which is typically untradeable. This finding has motivated this study which through the Structural VAR model tried to analyze the relations between the gross domestic product GDP and the FDI for the Brazilian economy in the period of 1986 to 2009. The results suggest that the FDI has a small effect, but positive, on the GDP. In spite of being small, this effect is an important external stimulus and it can be intensified as the improvement on the internal conditions happens – infrastructure, development of the financial system, etc. In addition, the feedback of GDP, as it’s given a shock in the direct investment, it doesn’t disappear quickly, it indicates that such shock have a repercussion during long periods after the investment. This fact suggests the importance of this kind of investment for the Brazilian economy, mainly, if in the attraction, it is observed the quality and not only the quantity of FDI.
