Resumo

This paper analyses the importance of the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) for the public administration and identifies the stages in the process of implementation of KM of six Brazilian federal organizations – Banco do Brasil, Banco Central do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa), Serviço de Processamento de Dados (Serpro), Petróleo Brasileiro S. A. (Petrobras) – according with the method adopted by the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC): “Road Map to Knowledge Management Results”.
Knowledge Management practices in the organizations are highlighted and KM in the public sector is seen as part of the field of study known as Public Management. It is argued that the objective of KM in public organizations should be seen in a broader perspective than in the private sector and it is stressed the importance of a public knowledge management policy – with clear guidelines and strategies – to spread KM to all areas of the Brazilian federal government and to quicken the process of institutionalization of KM in the Public Administration as well.
