Resumo

In the current international landscape, especially following the 2008 global financial crisis and its effects, there is a growing rivalry between the United States and China, characterized by its geopolitical and geoeconomic nature. The Chinese rise in recent decades, driven primarily by robust economic growth and the establishment of partnerships and trade agreements, prominent along the Asia-Pacific region, has triggered a multidimensional reaction from the United States, aimed at containing China’s gains in influence, particularly in its surrounding region. Initially named the Pivot to Asia in 2011, this containment geostrategy took on new forms and developments following the first Donald Trump administration (2017-2021), when it was renamed the Indo-Pacific strategy. Currently, under the second Trump administration (2025-2029), this plan is deepening its perspective of strategic competition with China. This article investigates this multifactorial dispute for regional preferences, emphasizing the distinct parameters being constructed by Washington, especially in Southeast Asia, which have a growing character of confrontation between the logics of geopolitics versus geoeconomics. In this context, the American Indo-Pacific is notoriously more associated with a geopolitical zero-sum game, facing a deep disadvantage compared to Chinese propositions of a geoeconomic nature, which are more influential in the regions under analysis.
