Resumo

The objective of this work is to discuss women’s entrance into Brazilian soccer during the years 1915-1941 before state-sponsored governing bodies stepped in to regulate sporting practices and before the prohibition of certain modalities for women in 1941. This study draws on newspapers and magazines from this post-prohibition period as well as iconographic institutional archives and personal collections. The purpose of the research is to present an overview of the involvement of different social groups of women who adhered to the practice, in different historical moments, playing different roles. Venues such as Rio de Janeiro's sports parties, circus shows and suburban courts were key sites where the phenomenon of “women’s football” manifested. By capturing the peculiarities of each of these occurrences, we can create a profile of the tensions and confrontations women faced in the studied period. Finally,we conclude that if the increase in female initiation in football somehow met male interests, both on and off the sports pitch, it also intensified conflicts over gender roles for men and women in Brazilian society.
