Resumo
Purpose – The main objective of this project is to understand the factors, from the alumni’s perspective, that influence when choosing an executive master’s program in business administration (MPA). In this regard, the literature framework focused on Executive Master’s Programs’ rankings within Brazil along with their evolution throughout the years. The research was carried out using the Executive Master´s program database of its alumni (program conclusion between 2002-2016) from FGV EBAPE. Design/Methodology – A survey was conducted among alumni from the different executive master´s program at FGV EBAPE. Through this survey, quantitative and qualitative data was collected. In order to identify the factors that influence the choosing of one of the MPAs, the following data analysis techniques were considered: (a) Exploratory Factor Analysis (AFE); and (b) Content Analysis (AC). Findings – The uncovered factors impacting choice after the Exploratory Factor Analysis were the following: (a) Networking; (b) Quality and Reputation; (c) Benefit from the master’s program to a resumé; and (d) Focus on Internationalization. In addition to the indicators before mentioned, the Content Analysis method also uncovered the following major factors impacting choice from the alumni’s perspective: the importance of an alumni association; the possibility for career advancement/transition; crossover to the academic sector; FGV’s reputation; the possibility to continue towards a doctorate program; and research incentive. Practical implications – The results indicated that in order to attract new and better students, Executive Master’s Programs in administration (MPAs) should rely heavily on the four elements pointed out by the AFE: (a) Networking; (b) Quality and Reputation; (c) Benefit from the master’s program to a resumé; and (d) Focus on Internationalization. The factors identified during the content analysis should also serve as tools to improve the development of Executive Master Programs. Social implications – As this research project exposed consistent indicators regarding the quality improvement within the Higher Education Institutions (Instituições de Ensino Superior - IES), these, consequentially, can benefit by implementing these factors within its framework in order to have a recognized program as well as improve academic excellence. As such, these institutions could then offer graduate level program (stricto sensu) that measure up to the target audience´s expectations. Consequentially benefiting society as a whole.
