Resumo

Purpose – Empowering leadership has become increasingly as a leadership style that elevates
 relationship between leadership and followers to build working structures and processes to effectively contribute to better results and organizational excellence. Studies have suggested that empowering leadership strengthen leadership-followers relationship through sharing
 power, autonomy and responsibility, and trust. The study purpose is investigating the influence of empowering leadership on the followers’ voice and silence behavior, as well as the mediation effect of followers’ courage and the moderation effect of leadership political behavior.
 Methodology – All the information was obtained via quantitative survey research, and data were collected using a basic online questionnaire distributed to the participants (n=285), all of them employees from engineering service and production private companies of the oil and gas, petrochemical and energy sector sited in Brazil southeast and northeast region. Findings – The empowering leadership has shown that is positively related to voice behavior, and also to courage, and negatively related to silence behavior. The results showed important effects of followers’ perception related to the leadership political behavior to the courage, and
 the mediation of the relationship between empowering leadership and followers’ voice and silence behavior.
 Research limitations – Scale to measure courage, adapted and used without formal validation, and eventual negative effect of common method bias. Practical implications/ contributions – The study findings suggested relevant aspects considerations related to the influence of empowering leadership to the followers’ voice and
 silence behavior, that effectively contribute to better understanding of leadership-followers relationship, with theoretical and practical implications to the management of organizations. This study has shown the necessity of leadership become more conscientious about the
 influence and importance of their exercise of leadership under the perception of followers bring to the organization’s efficacy and productivity. Originality – Leadership behavior and influence on followers’ perception and behavior
