Resumo

This study employs the Frontier Production Functions (FPF) approach – deterministic and stochastic – to analyze the performance of a number of municipalities to some Brazilian industrial sectors using firm level data surveyed by IBGE, the Brazilian Census Bureau. The panel data has economic information from leading firms in their sectors for 1996/1998. The results concerning the stochastic frontier show diversity in sector performance for 1996/1998, but indicate that the majority sectors records positive shifts of their performance. The coefficient of Year indicates that the value of output has tended to increase by a small, but insignificant, rate over the three-year period. The estimated coefficients in the inefficiency model are of particular interest to this study: the results indicate that the model, involving a constant term, industrial concentration, dummy variable, schooling and year of observation, is a significant component in the stochastic frontier production function. Further theoretical and applied work is obviously required to obtain better and more general models for stochastic frontier and technical inefficiency effects associated with the analysis of panel data.
