Eficiência técnica, produtividade e liderança tecnológica na industria bancária brasileira

Resumo

This paper analyzes the evolution of the technical efficiency (TE) and productivity of the financial institutions in Brazil after the substantial increase in the participation of foreign banks in the national industry. This way, this study estimates a production frontier for the TE using the method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In addition and also making use of the estimated TE, this article also calculates the Malmquist’s
 total productivity index. The banking industry improved total productivity based exclusively on the technological progress. On the other hand, the TE of the Brazilian banks dropped 3.6%. The foreign banks were responsible for most of the productivity gains, followed by the private national banks. These
 latter, however, established the technological pattern for the Brazilian industry as indicated by a testing
 procedure for technological leadership. This test compares the frontiers of the banking sub-groups (private domestic banks, foreign banks and public banks) and the meta-frontier for the whole industry.
