Resumo

Starting from the evidence that many of those, presently engaged with the processes of program development and decision making in Brazilian Public Administration academy, have gotten their degrees in the United States, being, therefore, often conditioned by such living and learning experience, the author discusses, in the first place, the higher education system in Public Administration in the United States, under the intention of improving the general understanding of alternatives discussed, as well as of decisions ma de in Brazil in regard to that subject matter. The graduate level education in Public Administration; its evolution in the United States since the 1960s, and the present state of the art both in that country and in Brazil, are the central issues of this article. The barriers which tend to difficult the transfer of educational experiences from one country to the other, given their cultural differences, are analyzed by the author, while emphasizing the variables that must be taken into account in the Brazilian case, especially in reference to the work which is being developed by the Brazilian School of Public Administration of Fundação Getulio Vargas.
