Resumo
The several environmental impacts caused by many economic activities demand a new attitude from companies. In the fashion industry, that operates on the linear model and the fast fashion strategy, the discussion of environmental impacts is even more relevant, considering its economic importance and that these impacts are throughout the entire production chain, especially in the product development process. Thus, the search for eco-innovations can favor company’s environmental performance and contribute to the transition from de linear model to the circular economy. In this context, this research aims to investigate how eco-innovation practices, in the product development process, can favor circularity in clothing companies. The research strategy adopted is a multiple case study. Among the results of the research, it is possible to highlight the verification that eco-innovations, in the product development process, contribute to a cleaner production process and to the creation of a flow of resources that alters the linear model and favors the implementation of circular economy. The companies investigated use a variety types of eco-innovations that facilitate the adoption of different models of circularity. It is important to emphasize the great potential that microenterprises have shown, compared to large companies, for the implementation of eco-innovations and, consequently, reaching the circular model. The main circular practices identified in the cases are the reuse and/or recycling of production residues, the recycling or donation of clothes, the use of online platforms for the second-hand market, clothes refurbishment services and the production of biodegradable clothing. As ways to strengthen and expand the circular practices of the cases, the study suggests the need for collaboration between brands with other agents in the fashion chain and the creation of public policies that bring incentives and benefits to companies that present good environmental performance.
