Resumo
Dividend policy is one the backbones of the decision process for corporate financial managers, in conjunction with investment and debt policies. Theories about dividend policy have developed based on the original contributions of Miller and Modigliani, as well as the studies of Lintner and Gordon. Many different points regarding dividend policies are analyzed in various studies that followed the steps of the previous mentioned authors, such as tax implications, agency costs, asymmetric information and signaling of financial perspectives. This theme continues to be deeply studied for many researchers all over the globe, showing controversial results and little consensus about the real effect of different dividend policies for corporations and its shareholders. This situation can also be observed in Brazil, where an additional point should be considered: the distribution of interest on equity; which represents another mechanism, with specific tax considerations, to distribute financial resources to shareholders. This dissertation analyses a specific aspect of dividend policy: its alleged capability to send signals to the market regarding future prospect of a corporation. The assumption behind the analysis is that the distribution of dividends and interest on equity represents signals to the market regarding the future profitability of a company and, therefore, can be considered valid instruments for the financial manager to send information to the market concerning financial developments of a firm. Previous research in the American market obtains different and conflicting conclusions, in some research corroborating with mainstream theory and, in other studies, denying the informational content of dividends. Based on data from companies with shares traded on BOVESPA between 1999 / 2004, the author concludes that it is not possible to confirm the existence of the information content of dividends. Based on multiple regression (OLS and WLS), it is not possible to confirm the correlation between variation (increase or decrease) of dividend distribution to the increase or decrease of profits in the following periods. In summary, the dividend policy continues to be of the most controversial aspects in corporate financial management.
