Resumo

This quantitative study aims to investigate socioeconomic variables that may influence the occurrence of suicide in Brazil. Panel data was used, from 2010 to 2015, with gender distinction. The studied variable was the suicide rate in 2017 the Brazilian states and the explanatory variables were: Municipal Human Development Index – MHDI (education dimension); Gini Coefficient; Social Infrastructure Vulnerability Indicator (IVS); unemployment rate; and, divorce rate. The most suitable model for data analysis was the fixed effects panel regression. For each explanatory variable, the results were different depending on gender. The results only partially confirmed with the empirical literature used, which was also divergent in their findings. This study indicates that there is an evolution of suicide in Brazil, largely explained by the MHDI and the IVS.
