Resumo

The high degree of income inequality is a chronic trait of the Brazilian society, and is in the center of the country’s social-political agenda. The social demand for public policies that contribute to narrowing the differentials and disparities is intense and has been increasing in recent times. This paper aims at providing elements that may be of help for the conception of these policies, chiefly through the identification of the main determinants of such an asymmetric earnings structure. The most important result is that educational heterogeneity, together with the income profile associated with the individuals’ degree of schooling, are the main reasons behind both the level and evolution of inequality. Though in a lesser extent, elements related to discrimination and segmentation in the labor market also revealed themselves important for such matter.
