Demand and accessibility of transportation in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (2017)

Resumo

This study analyzes the macro-accessibility of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region in 2017 through descriptive analysis and a Generalized Linear Model (GLM) applied to data from the Metro’s Origin and Destination Survey. The results indicate that road infrastructure has broad territorial coverage, whereas the rail-based transportation network exhibits limited metropolitan capillarity. The modeling showed that travel distance, number of modes used, and the first mode chosen are significant predictors, and that the macro-accessibility of individual transportation yielded better estimates of travel duration compared to public transportation. The findings highlight advantages of individual transportation as well as territorial inequalities in micro-accessibility, which affect both travel demand and the efficiency of the metropolitan transportation system.
