Resumo

Public transportation systems have been losing demand over the last three decades, exposing the loss of attractiveness and competitiveness that this segment faces. What has been observed in Brazil is that since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, this phenomenon has intensified, with the demand for public transportation not recovering, even with the end of the health crisis and the stronger resumption of economic activity. The work showed, through the analysis of origin-destination surveys in the São Paulo metropolitan region carried out before and after the pandemic, some socioeconomic phenomena that have intensified recently during this period and that profoundly impact the demand for public transportation. The aging of the population associated with the reduction in the number of students, the increase in the population’s education level associated with the increase in work from home, in addition to the increase in trips using transportation apps, can be highlighted. These results raise some important issues for debate, such as the need to enable extra-tariff financing of public transportation.
