De Jean-Michel Basquiat a CyberB@squiatArtista, Máquina e Narrativa na Ontocartografia de uma Imagem Sobrevivente

Resumo

This doctoral thesis has as its focus bringing to Brazilian academic thought the life and work of the North American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), exploring a historicity that considers a ubiquitous post-existence of the artist through the survival of his image, disseminated through media and digital means, here understood under the theoretical scope of the French anthropologist Bruno Latour as a “Basquiat-network”. By exploring how this image interacts, evolves and perpetuates itself in different socio- technical contexts, the research falls within the field of Digital Humanities and aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Basquiat's role as an Afro-Atlantic agent who, from the perspective of theory by Paul Gilroy, is transnational and deterritorialized – therefore dissuaded from a “foreign” context – radiating its decolonial and anti-racist narratives in this century after its existence, of considerable relevance to the Brazilian Afro-affirmative context. Here we seek to build historicity through a specific path: the elaboration of an “onto-cartography”, a theoretical construct by the philosopher Levi Bryant, exploring the complexity of Basquiat's images beyond his works, including photographs and self-portraits, going from the territorial context to imagery, investigating its diffusion. Onto-cartography is used in the research as a methodology that maps the different ontological layers of the diffusion of the image of this Basquiat-network. Within this approach, a scientific experiment aligned with the philosophical fiction of Vilém Flusser is applied, creating the Instagram character CyberBasquiat for a diagnosis that seeks to transcend the conventional epistemic path of “studying the painter through his paintings”, delving into the complex interactions between the artist's image, the cultural zeitgeist and the technical reproducibility of his poetics via mediations. The study comprises a multidisciplinary analysis, involving theories of Art, Communication and Philosophy, with the aim of unveiling the narratives underlying the media survival of Jean-Michel Basquiat's image.
