Resumo

The corruption phenomenon has been approached in the social organization by several means, such as focused on the underlying causes, consequences, functions envolved or solutions for the problem. Even the conceptualization of the phenomenon has produced several models, being low the levei of consensus on the subject. Because of that, personal behaviors and acts ranging from the least to the most severe are qualified under the heading of corruption. The lack of precision on the initial classification of what really is corruption has led to a grouping of corruption definition in four groups, focused on: (a) the market; (b) the public opinion; (c) the public attention and media coverage; d) the formal rules and norms. This article sumarizes each one of the approaches on the subject and for the purpose of explaining such a diversity of understanding. It suggests that the individual value process and the insertion of the researches  in specific area of study may cause different meanings and interpretations to the phenomenon of corruption.
