Cooperativismo agropecuário e crédito ruralevidências empíricas para o estado do Paraná a partir de modelos em dados em painel

Resumo

This study examines the association between the intensity of agricultural cooperatives and the dynamics of rural credit in the state of Paraná, Brazil, from 2016 to 2021. The analysis focuses on how the relative presence of cooperatives measured in relation to the local agricultural production structure and financial infrastructure is related to the volume of rural credit, the number of credit operations, and the composition of lending institutions. The empirical strategy relies on administrative data from the Brazilian Rural Credit and Proagro System (SICOR), covering the full universe of credit operations in the state, and employs panel data models with fixed effects to control for unobserved heterogeneity across municipalities and over time. The results show no statistically significant association between cooperative intensity and the total volume of rural credit. However, a positive and statistically significant association is identified for short-term production credit custeio, suggesting that cooperatives play a more prominent role in financing working capital rather than long-term investments. No significant effects are found for the number of credit operations, nor is there evidence of heterogeneous effects across different types of financial institutions. Overall, the findings indicate that agricultural cooperatives have a specific, rather than generalized, role in the rural credit market, contributing primarily to short-term financing. These results provide new evidence on the functioning of rural credit systems at the regional level and highlight the importance of considering credit modality heterogeneity when evaluating the role of cooperatives.
