Resumo
One of the main solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change, global warming and biodiversity loss is environmental conservation. At the same time, the challenge of doing it is recognized globally, since it engenders a complex scenario due to different, diverse and numerous paradigms, worldviews and cultures. In this sense, those who practice Brazilian African matrix religions are part of this system and can, from their particular worldview, constitute one of the ways to contribute to environmental conservation. The main objective of this study is to understand how and why Umbanda takes care of nature, from the perspective of cultural ecosystem services and the nature’s contributions to people. It is also seeking to identify how, in the context of environmental conservation, the relationship between the State and the religions of African matrix takes place, taking as granted the primordial and inherent role the State has in the socio-environmental issue. For this purpose, a case study of the Umbanda National Sanctuary at the Pedroso Municipal Natural Park in Santo André (SP) was conducted in this research. The methodology consisted of qualitative research based on semistructured interviews and collection of photos and documents. It was observed that, in fact and in accordance with literature, nature is a fundamental aspect in the practices of Umbanda and in the management of the Sanctuary. The main find in this respect was to identify that the non-material nature’s contributions to Umbanda holders reflect on a material Umbanda’s contribution to nature. Even so, there was an intermittent and fragile recognition of the socioenvironmentally responsible aspect of Umbandists by the public power, which reflects aspects of its religious racism. It is concluded that public strategies should be established for better social participation in the management of municipal parks, combined with the management of evidence-based public policies and the recognition of the beneficial role for the nature of those who practice Brazilian religions of African matrix, which permeates the deconstruction of religious intolerance towards them.
