Resumo
The purpose of this work is to the relationship between Coelho Netto (writer) sport. An attempt was made to analyze the history of this writer during the earliest years of sports development in Rio de Janeiro city, including several peculiar aspects of his history that were essential for the construction of his image as a sportman. As theoretical basis, this work shows Bourdieu’s ideas about distinction and Hobsbawm & Ranger’s ideas about invention of traditions. These ideas are necessary in order to demonstrate how writer Coelho Netto was responsible for the construction of a series of symbolic values and traditions, which associated sports with distinction and refinement.
