Resumo

In view of the relevance of the agricultural sector in the Brazilian rural environment, a potential study on rural development in the Cerrados of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia (Matopiba) in Brazil is relevant, as it allows verifying the particularities of development rural areas of their municipalities. Thus, this study aims to identify and analyze homogeneous groups of municipalities with different levels of rural development in the Brazilian Matopiba. Specifically, it is intended to analyze the determining factors of rural development; measure the Rural Development Index (IDR); group the municipalities according to level of rural development and correlate the IDR with the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), using the techniques of factor analysis, clusters and Pearson correlation. The results based on the 2017 Agricultural Census and the Annual Report
on Social Information (Rais) revealed an expressive heterogeneity in rural development, in which, of the 305 municipalities analyzed, 90.16% had a very low or low RDI. On the other hand, only 9.84% gave rise to medium IDR and no municipality registered high rural development, considering he established parameters. Furthermore, there was a low correlation between the IDR and the agricultural GDP, confirming the multidimensional character of rural development, which exceeds the income levels reached by the population.
