Resumo

Since OD theories and intervention methodologies were framed and created in the setting of highly industrialized society, primarily the United States, curiosity about its cross-cultural efficacy seems in order to the Author. This article tries to answer the following questions: When utilized in societies less highly industrialized, to what extent is OD capable of fulfilling its promise to meaningfully after social organizations? To what degree can OD theories and practices be construed as a body of knowledge capable of contextually specific modification? Even more importantly, how can the knowledge already available turn into a social product and a factor in social change? Using Berger and Luckman's formulation about culture change and maintenance as a backdrop, the Author develops a framework to present OD as organizational praxis. He used that framework also to assess OD theory within highly industrialized society and in cross-cultural settings, in order to create a corner-stone towards a comparative OD.
