Resumo
In Brazil, the responsibility for environmental management is shared between the federal, state, and municipal governments. In this context, this study aims to identify if municipal policies, which are proxied by environmental preservation and conservation expenditures, have contributed to the reduction of primary vegetation deforestation, an effect that has already been identified in the literature for federal policies. To answer this question, the study uses a panel data model with fixed effects and instrumental variables. The data has a national scale and refers to the period between 2004 and 2019. The results indicate that municipal policies didn’t have a statistically significant effect on deforestation during that period. The study contributes to the literature by analyzing municipal policies and using national data, since most studies focus on federal policies in the Amazon.
