Resumo
The main objective of this work was to broaden the understanding of the effects of the COVID19 pandemic on the people management in a medium-sized family business, in order to contribute to the plurality of themes researched about family businesses, due to the importance and representativeness of this type of company in the business world, especially in the unprecedented context caused by the pandemic. In order to reach the proposed objective, we sought to investigate how the pandemic influenced the people management in the researched family business, especially in the dyad formality and informality, a characteristic present in small and medium family businesses, seeking to understand the main movements of the organization in the adoption of preventive measures of protection to the employees, the perception of the employees about these measures and the implication of these measures under the point of view of some organizational elements. This is, therefore, a qualitative, single case study research, which made use of the content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016) as a methodological approach. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 17 executives of the researched company, distributed in three levels: strategic, tactical, and operational technical. The findings of the interviews resulted in five categories of analysis: Safety at Work, Organizational Communication, Work Organization, Leadership, and People Management Policies and Practices, indicating that the pandemic did not influence a greater or lesser formality in the management of the company, but made explicit unequal treatments generated by informality, generating demand from the interviewees for more formality through the standardization of rules and criteria in the company, in the name of equal and fair treatment. In other words, the pandemic seems to have pointed out a problem and directed the terms according to which the company will need to deal with it. At the end of this study, contributions and suggestions are indicated for the company researched, pointing out possible ways to deal with the issues highlighted by the pandemic.
