Resumo

This dissertation presents a reflection on the different forms of activation and meanings which are found in the documents of the Political Police archives group of the Public Archive of the State of Rio de Janeiro (APERJ), obtained by repressive agencies during the period of military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985). We present throughout the work the way in which Political Police documents were organized by the technical team of the Public Archives of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the dilemmas and challenges faced during the process of gathering, organizing and, later, the access to the public. In addition, we developed a discussion about the social uses of archives, especially those obtained during the Brazilian military dictatorship period, defending the importance which the access to these documents has for the history and memory of our country, as well as for the construction and consolidation of a democratic society. We observed, through the analysis of restitution request processes, how victims and relatives of the dead and disappeared ones build a narrative of law based on the use of documents under the custody of the Public Archive of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, we assessed how the National Truth Commission (CNV) and the State Truth Commission of Rio de Janeiro (CEVRio) utilized the documents of the Political Police archives group in their investigations, seeking information about the violences and human rights violations committed by agents of the Brazilian State during the military dictatorship (1964-1985).
