Resumo
This paper analyses the current crisis of the sanitation sector (purê watar supply and drainage and disposal of sewage) in Brazil and discusses the possible ways of suspassing it. After locating the sector within the context of the Brazilian economic development, it follows an historic review of the evolution of the supply of these services in Brazil concentrating attention on the institucional organization the sector, from it’s creation to nowadays. At the end of this section the reader will find an evaluation of the results of the PLANASE model. The reformulation proposals are analysed in the last section. This analysis shows that the way out of this crisis will require more than fiscal measuresç in fact what is needed is a solution for the financing of the Brazilian public sector as a whole.
