Resumo
The objective of this article is to analyse the performance of the Brazilian automobile industry since the early 1980's and the perspective of its recovery and development. It is examined the factors related to the drastic recession of the internal market and the reasons for the relative failure of the export solution. It is emphasized the explanation that the present backwardness of the local industry is caused by the strong protectionism in its passed history and by the changing forms of reaction of the multinational corporations of the Western World that operates in Brazil to the Japonese leading movement in the world industry.
