Resumo

The current model of production and consumption, based on a linear logic of extraction, manufacture and disposal, is unsustainable. There is an urgent need for a transition to a circular model that maximizes the usefulness of resources and products, reducing or eliminating the generation of waste. In this scenario, the textile industry stands out in a very negative way, considered one of the most polluting in the world, with impacts on all stages of the life cycle of a product, from the choice of raw materials, the means of production, to the discard. As an alternative, we find organizations seeking to work on the issue of textile waste, through a market logic. Its work focuses on circulating and recycling textiles, simultaneously seeking to bring a socioenvironmental benefit and generate profit, in order to enable the achievement of this mission. That said, the main objective of this study is to understand how business organizations can contribute in the search for solutions to the issue of textile waste, considering the application of circularity principles in their activities. The work was carried out through multiple case studies conducted in two organizations: the social business Retalhar, which performs the reverse logistics and recycling of professional uniforms, and Banco de Tecido, a system for the exchange and sale of fabrics, which promotes the circulation of reuse cloth. Analyzing the performance of both companies, the contribution to the Circular Economy and Sustainable Development materializes as academics affirm that the reuse and recycling of textiles can be a sustainable solution for reducing the sending of solid waste to landfills, reducing the extraction and production of virgin materials, energy consumption and consequently generating a smaller environmental footprint. This performance, however, is accompanied by challenges and limitations, such as reduced scale of businesses with difficulties to expand it, and the identification of a low engagement of companies in the direct textile chain. In this way, they encourage, even if initially, a transition to a more sustainable model of production and consumption as they employ these circularity principles, pursuing their hybrid purpose of financial and socio-environmental sustainability.
