Resumo

The manuscript censuses ("Listas)Nominativas") of the Province IC'Capitania") of Sao Paulo are very rich sources for the study of Late Colonial and Early Imperial periods of Brazilian History; however they show easily perceivable contradictions. This article aims to estimate the size of these discrepancies by means of a case study: two consecutive censuses of Ubatuba, corresponding to the years 1805 and 1806, a period in which these documents seem to have been more carefully made. The investigation focuses firstly on the problems created by the presence of two copie? of the documents; finally, a comparison is made between the data consistency of the family groups that remained in the same district ("companhia"), with those who moved but could be found elsewhere. The article concludes that, although there is a rather high number of small inconsistencies, it doesn't preventthe use of ttie data.
