Escravos e livres nas Minas Gerais do século XIXcampanha em 1831

Resumo

This paper deals with the age, sex, origin, and occupational structure of the slave population as well as its distribution among slave owners, using as a source the newly available manuscript censuses. Our study will stress as well, the social and economic characteristics of the free population among whom these slaves lived. We have selected for our analysis one of the largest and most urbanized municipio of Minas Gerais: Campanha in 1831. The surprising finding in our study is that these was a very high rate of natural growth being shown among the native born slaves. So dramatic was the fertility ratio that was able to overcome the very negative growth rates of African slaves who made up almost half of slave labor force.
