Resumo

Abstract  This paper aims at discussing the theoretical basis of two contemporary and deeply distinct employment policies: the enhancement of market labor flexibility and the reduction of labor working time. While the first find support in New Keynesian models of the labor market, the second is based on a Marxian approach. It is argued that those theoretical framework are built on antagonist visions on the self-equilibrating mechanism of the market and, consequently, on the role of the State in dealing with unemployment. The paper concludes that theories that presume the non-existence of a power asymmetry between buyers and suppliers of the labor force in capitalist economies give rhetoric and logic sustentation to policies that eventually reinforce this power asymmetry. Key words: Unemployment. Labor market flexibility. New Keynesians. Marx, Karl, 1818-1883. Reduction of labor working time
