Resumo

Nowadays, merchant ships are carrying all kinds of modern world commodities, but during their operation produce waste. Therefore, sustainable management is necessary. Currently, a set of measures have been activated in order to address this potential threat based on strict legislative framework. This study will attempt an approach, in order to clarify the current and future adequacy of the ships' waste reception facilities at the port of Corinth in Greece within the limits of the existingand forthcoming management regulations. The current research followed an extensive quantitative and qualitative methodological approach. Results evince that the port of Corinth is not currently considered at risk from irregular ships' waste discharges into the marine environment. However, considering the latest adopted expansion master plan, port facilities appear partially adequate to manage the additional burden. Therefore the establishment of permanent reception facilities issuggested.
