Resumo

The aim of this article is to understand the different growth trajectories of Brazil and South Korea since 1980, despite the two economies, initially, have gone through a similar process of structural transformation. The reason for the stagnation of the brazilian economy, after a period of high growth (1960-1980), is the low productivity of the service sector. The hypothesis sustained in the paper is that the inefficiency of this sector is a result of the migration of unskilled workers from agriculture towards services. With these facts in mind, the article proposes a model that incorporates, to the framework of structural transformation, the decision of human capital of adults, who face a trade-off between the number of children and the education given to them. And the different government policies towards education and child labor policies implemented in the economies affect the problem of individuals and the growth trajectories.
