Trabalhadores do salorganização sindical e lutas sociais nas salinas cabo-frienses – 1940/1974

Resumo

This thesis analyzes the local history of the salt workers, men and women responsible for the work in the salt marshes in Cabo Frio, between the 1940s and the 1970s. This period spans the peak and the decline of the salt production in the Fluminense region. The process of the salt workers’ identity constitution, and the order between classes, races and genders are emphasized. The thesis also sheds light on the salt workers’ presence in the public space and highlights their involvements in politics and the evolution of their tradeunion, which is significantly relevant by the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s. Even though the salt production that occurred in the three towns around the Araruama’s lagoon had similar characteristics, the main focus of the analysis is Cabo Frio. As a matter of fact, it was the preferred « locus » for the production and commercialization of the product, as well as the main stage of the class struggle at that time. In that respect, the thesis aims to investigate the part that those workers played in the struggle for political and labor rights, along with the construction of the town. The intention of the study is to contribute in the same manner to the visibility of this social group which has been so fundamental in the growth of the region, and which has nonetheless been erased from the historiography and the official local and national memory.
