Resumo

This thesis reconstitutes the production of São Paulo's organized fan groups as discursive and political agents in the pages of the newspaper Popular da Tarde during the Brazilian democratization process (1981-1988). In this period, the supporters published columns with their agendas, demands, and grievances in the section of the periodical called "Jornal das Torcidas". It investigates how this hemerographic space functioned as a field of mediation between the popular culture of the stands and the public sphere surrounding football, the newspaper's preferred reading public: supporters, professionals, directors, and specialists (Toledo, 2002). Funded on the theoretical assumptions of Pierre Bourdieu, Edward P. Thompson, and Raymond Williams, the thesis articulates the notions of habitus, experience, and moral economy to understand the "supporter morality" and the dispositions of these agents in the face of changes in society and Brazilian football throughout the period. Taking also as a reference Discourse Analysis (Maingueneau), it examines the representations of self and the dynamics of violence and resistance that characterized the relationship between supporters, the State, and the press. The study concludes that the newspaper operated as a support for the outpouring of a subaltern structure of feeling, allowing the "voices of the stands" to objectify themselves as political agency, in addition to serving as a source to reconstitute the main misunderstandings that occurred in the period between the clubs' own associations.
