The use of Historical GIS in the analysis of the genesis and form of cities in the northeast of São Paulo

Resumo

In the urban network polarized by the villages of Casa Branca, in the Province of São Paulo, during the 19th century, municipalities were born from religious property donations and make up the northeast portion of the current State of São Paulo, in the border with Minas Gerais. This work proposes to demonstrate the formation of this territory and of some of its urban spaces, analyzing the morphogenesis and the urban routes of these settlements, related to the network of paths. The investigation falls within the scope of studies of History of Urbanization that use Historical GIS tools and works from textual and cartographic sources, during the 19th century. It seeks to contribute to studies on the genesis of small municipalities, creating thematic cartographies that pose questions about the formation of the network and urban spaces.
