The issue of unemployment and the situation in Brazil

Resumo

This study intends to ana1yze the problem of unemployment in Brazil. Since it was necessary to discuss the conceptual aspects involved, the Author decided to divide it in two different parts. First1y, he briefly analyzes the different views through which this phenomenon is qualified, trying to demonstrate its inherence to capitalistic social formations, resulting, also, from the unremitting pursuit of the investment growth, by means of an introduction of technical and technological innovations in the production process. In the work's second part, the Author specüica1ly studied unemployment in Brazil. His reasoning developed as an attempt to show that this socio-economic problem has always been presented in the country, even during its phases of economic expansion, even though the problem itself has been ignored as such by governmental authorities. Either it was hidden under official statistics, due to the adopted methodology, or was it disguised as underemployment. In an effort to numerica1ly prove his assertions, the Author used statistical data on underemployment and unemployment in Brazil and a1so in terms of comparison with other countries.
