The impacts of state action and social housing policies on the construction of the subject – the case of the North Zone individual

Resumo

This article aims to understand how the socio-spatial changes taken place in São José do Rio Preto’s urban space – specifically in its northern region –, a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, were apprehended by its inhabitants throughout their life trajectories. The purpose was to identify the effects of such apprehension in their subjectivation process. To do so, the transformation of the peripheral North Zone from a stigmatized outskirts into centrality was analyzed. The analysis of the municipality’s socio-economic setting contributed to the undertaking of semi-structured interviews in order to understand the local inhabitant’s perception of their neighborhood. That made it possible to uncover a complex web of mechanisms, discourses, strategies and agents driven by neoliberal rationality, including the State, that led to a resignification of place. The individual subject, a product of this constellation of factors, conceptualizes the North Zone without, however, exploring its potential for social change. New subjectivation processes are necessary to restore community unity capable of fostering space co-production for genuine democratization of the right to the city.
