Space organization in the state of Rio de Janeiroareas peripheral to the cities

Resumo

The changes that the rapid growth of cities brought about on their neighboring areas are not restricted to the process of parceling land for purposes of construction development. They are also felt in the altered agrarian structure, in working practices and, generally, in the way they affect the whole relationship between the city and the countryside. Areas surrounding the cities are said to be urban-peripheral and, although presenting characteristics of the old rural zone, have nonetheless many peculiar aspects. One of those is the form of objective space occupation, in which are practiced some intensive forms of agricultural use, of a profit-centered nature and, consequently, subject to constant incertitude. In addition to an intensive, localized agricultural activity, secondary dwellings - for use during more prolonged periods of respite from work - area constantly increasing in number. Moreover, there are mixed agricultural types, combining home and recreational forms. Such a process has been noted in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, and now it covers already an ample area, in fact a territory twice as big as the metropolis itself. To properly understand this phenomenon has a fundamental importance for the promotion of more adequate forms of organizing the space considered.
