Sobre papéis, trajetórias e dádivasa doação da coleção Benedicto Ottoni para a Biblioteca Nacional

Resumo

The Benedicto Ottoni collection, made up of thousands of historical prints and manuscripts about Brazil, was purchased in 1911 by Júlio Ottoni from his friend, the journalist José Carlos Rodrigues, with the promise that it would be gifted to the country’s National Library. The manifest objective of such an action was to turn the collection into public heritage and destine the revenue from its sale to an incipient philanthropic endeavor called Policlínica das Crianças, a poor children’s health-care facility founded by Rodrigues in 1909. One sought to show that, beyond the manifest motivation for this combined action, other latent features, linked to obtaining prestige and establishing legacies, accompanied the donation. In order to sustain this argument, it was necessary to explore the meaning of the collection in a broader picture: what it represented to its collector, José Carlos Rodrigues; the value of historical papers about Brazil in the beginning of the twentieth century; the perception about the National Library as a keeper of such historical artefacts; and the way the institution rewarded such gifts, in the form of symbolic goods. This research showed how the formation of public collections is originated from a combination of individual and institutional strategies, resulting in the intertwining of those involved, under the mediation of cultural artefacts, which bear the signs of the path previously undertaken.
