Resumo
The relevance of Vieira’s book lies in showing that, since the 1950s, Furtado’s vision of building a developed and civilized capitalist society already faced difficulties and impossibilities, evident in the new forms of dependency resulting from the industrialization of the Goals Plan (Plano de Metas) and openly revealed in the obstruction of his project within Sudene. Everything culminates with the 1964 coup. Furtado saw his project challenged by the resistance of conservative, property-owning, and patrimonialist elites, who blocked the advancement of the very capitalist logic of autonomous accumulation in the country.
