Reinsurance in Brazilretrospective and perspective

Resumo

The author redefines the role played by insurance in the Brazilian society, treating his subject in a sociological and historical way. In the section. Primórdios do seguro no Brasil, he proceeds to an analysis of the formation of the Brazilian national State, showing that the insurance market, in parallel with the growth and diversification of the country's economy, has traced its evolutionary prospects within the boundaries of the 20th century. In the section O seguro no liberalismo econômico, the writer comments on the efforts towards nationalization and regulamentation, made by the insurance market in the beginning of this century and that culminated in 1939, with the functioning of the Instituto de Resseguros do Brasil (IRB). In the section O seguro na modernidade he leads us to a serious thinking on the following questions: decrease of the insurance market; insurance being nonexistent as a social goal; insurance and reinsurance failing to create, in the individual, a greater awareness of his citizenship; fitting of the insurance market to the Brazilian society's characteristics.
